Fun & Educational Summertime Activities Roundup!

Summertime Activities roundup-03.jpg

Summer is the best time to recoup from the school year for both teachers and students, but often as parents or caregivers summer is when we are in GO mode! You may find yourself still trying to plan and decide how you want to spend your summer (especially amidst the realities of travel this summer) and although your sweet kiddos may need a break from the rigors of school, you can still use summer as a time for hands on learning alongside all the fun BBQs, pool time, and travel. There are a lot of things you can do during the summer that you don’t often get around to during the regular school year. The kind of learning that tends to be fun for all ages includes science, geography, art, and cultural studies!  We have gathered a list of ideas for hands-on educational activities you can use throughout the summer and into the school year as well.

During the summer many families are most interested in getting out and experiencing life while others want to incorporate language and math throughout the summer. So many of these activities are easily accommodating to whatever is important to your family. You could include a writing piece for older children if you wanted, or incorporate math such as division and fractions as well. Making learning part of everything you do is simply the best way to develop a lifelong love of learning.

Take note, most of the activities we chose are water conscious, as so much of the United States is in drought this year. Some will not be and it is up to you to decide what is best for your family practices and area. A drought is also a great time to include some learning about water conservation!

Science

Children LOVE science. Often science lessons and materials are the most used in the classroom. Science is one of the best ways to get hands-on learning experiences in the summer at home because all ages can generally participate.

Geography

As traveling begins to open up this Summer, you may find yourself visiting overseas or in the mountains behind your home this year. Either way, traveling is a wonderful time to introduce geography to children. Delve into more than just where you will be going. Detail the route. Especially if you are going out of state or country. Even children as young as three or four are fascinated by this stuff and it can help allay some of the jitters of the unknown.

Culture

If you find yourself traveling to places with differing cultures this Summer, add some cultural lessons about your destination prior to your vacation. Other great ways to study your own and other cultures is through celebrations happening all over the world during the summer months.

  • Hajj Saudi Arabia - Annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca

  • International day of friendship July 30th - Activities

Art

Art ideas are sometimes an endless pit, especially when you begin to search through pins! So we are going to stick with art you can do outside. Art is a fantastic way to incorporate sensory learning into your summer days!

Outdoor Art

Art for Older Children

Although this list is not in the least bit exhaustive, we do hope it gives you a jumping off place to naturally incorporate some fun learning into your Summer activities at home!
